Boost to information about new hospital plans

Posted: September 10, 2025

People can now find out even more about plans for Scotland’s new hospital.

The dedicated website for the new University Hospital Monklands in Lanarkshire (www.monklands.org) has had a bumper update with brand new sections and a refresh of the existing pages.

NHS Lanarkshire’s Monklands Replacement Project (MRP) is currently driving forward with completion of its final business case for Scottish Government approval– which would open the door to the start of construction of Scotland’s most advanced hospital at Wester Moffat in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire.

The new hospital will have all the same services as the existing Monklands, including A&E.

As well as providing emergency and planned care for residents in its vicinity, the hospital will offer planned care for patients from across North and South Lanarkshire in its specialist services, which include cancer care, infectious disease medicine, renal (kidney) medicine, urology surgery, and ear, nose and throat surgery. It will also be home to all planned inpatient orthopaedic surgery in Lanarkshire.

Fiona Cowan, MRP Clinical Lead for Nursing, said:

“The updated website not only looks great, it’s also central to our commitment to keeping the public and our staff fully informed about our plans.

“The new Monklands will be a hospital for all of Lanarkshire’s communities so we hope people across the region will continue to visit the website regularly to check out the news section, which includes media releases, articles from NHS Lanarkshire’s staff magazine and blogs from our team.

“The newly-added pages have information on the issues people most often ask us about – the parking provision, which will be vastly increased, our commitment to providing suitable public transport links, and the planned East Airdrie Link Road that will give good access to the hospital.

“All these subjects and more are also covered in the website’s long-standing frequently asked questions, which are the first port of call for anyone who wants a quick overview of specific project topics.

“We’ve also added content about the innovative ways we’ll provide care, our ambitions for the use of digital technology, our sustainability and net zero goals, the latest timeline for our plans, and how we’ll make the big move to the new site when the hospital opens in 2031.

“A massive construction project brings a wider boost to the region, so we have added to the information about our exciting Community Benefits programme, which targets job creation, apprenticeships, learning opportunities, support for businesses large and small, and environmental enhancements.

“We’ve had a lot of engagement with young people so there’s also a section on career opportunities, with either our project partners as the MRP progresses or for those inspired to join NHS Lanarkshire and have the chance to one day work in our magnificent new hospital.

“All of this is enhanced with a selection of spectacular design images and engaging video content.”
