Hospital design in running for top international award

Posted: May 07, 2025

Our exciting plans for the new University Hospital Monklands are making waves internationally.

They’ve been shortlisted in the prestigious European Healthcare Design Awards.

Our design, created by the Monklands Replacement Project (MRP) with its architects, Keppie Design, is among the finalists in the European Healthcare Design Awards – Future Healthcare Design category.

The awards celebrate professional excellence in the design of healthcare projects around the world, with other finalists from the UK, Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US.

MRP Clinical Lead for Nursing, Fiona Cowan, who has led the MRP’s departmental and room design workshops, said:

“It’s a fantastic tribute to everyone involved in the design of our new net zero, digital hospital that it has made the awards shortlist against such tough competition from across the globe.”

“It’s been a real team effort from all the stakeholders who’ve contributed to our design process, including patients, the public and our staff.”

“We’re now finalising the project’s Full Business Case for approval by the Scottish Government. After that we can move on to making the vision a reality by starting hospital construction.”

David Ross, Director of Keppie Design, added:

“The philosophy behind the concept is to create an environment on a comfortable scale for people, promoting wellbeing through the creation of healthy, accessible and desirable spaces.”

“The campus planning has the concept of a ‘village’ and is based on two factors: making sure the right departments and services are next to each other; and connected ‘districts’ that allow daylight and the natural landscape of the site to be drawn into the heart of a digitally-connected hospital that is people-focused.”

“A new hospital goes far beyond simply providing better healthcare services. It has the potential to transform the surrounding community – and the wider region – in profound ways, creating ripple effects that benefit the local economy, social cohesion, infrastructure and public health outcomes.”

“We’re delighted that the ambition of such an important project has been recognised by the judging panel.”

The winners will be announced at the European Healthcare Design Congress in London on 10 June.
