New Patient Journeys
When we refer to the “front door” of the hospital, this essentially refers to patients who present to the Emergency Department as an unscheduled admission.
The redesigned hospital ‘front door’ model comprises the Emergency Department (ED), and an Assessment Village (AV) comprising 4 assessment wards for the management of patients presenting with potential medical and surgical conditions requiring rapid diagnosis and treatment as well a focus for the assessment of frail and elderly patients. This area is supported by the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area for patient which do not require admission for assessment but potentially some treatment and further investigations on the day. The majority of these patients are usually able to go home on the same day.

What will the new model mean for patients requiring surgery?
The model for patients requiring surgery at the new University Hospital Monklands is unique and centres on the new idea of a patient being in the same room for admission on day of surgery, pre-operative care and post-operative recovery. This new model will support patient centered care, particularly for children and adults requiring additional support.
More private space for patients, relatives and carers
Patients will be seen in a variety of spaces that include an admissions room, changing room, changed waiting area, first stage recovery and second stage recovery. The new model provides a much more efficient journey and is more person centred as it allows for the provision of a private space for patients and the opportunity for relatives and carers to remain with patients up to and immediately after their surgery.
