Immersive Suite

The Immersive Suite represents the most up-to-date approach to engagement in major construction projects.

Located on the campus of the existing University Hospital Monklands, it uses the latest technology to bring to life plans for the new hospital, set to open around 2031 at Wester Moffat in Airdrie.

Bringing the new hospital experience to life during the construction phase

The Suite will help our colleagues learn about the design and layout of the new Monklands, and will eventually be open for members of the community to visit and see large virtual representations of the interior and exterior of our state-of-the-art hospital.

At the heart of the Suite is an impressive 900-square-foot lecture theatre where sections of the hospital can be projected on three walls to give the audience an immersive experience and let them see departments and rooms on a grand scale.

This allows visitors to enjoy 360-degree views of a number of areas including a patient bedroom, a consultation room, the Emergency Department waiting area and the hospital exterior. There is also a control room – an area of big screens that mirrors the ‘command centre’ that will be in the new hospital.

Community Engagement

The suite, provided by MRP construction partner Laing O’Rourke, will support stakeholder engagement through design development, construction, handover and occupation. It brings key benefits including:

  • An accessible functional space to engage;
  • Virtual reality capability to better understand design, start early familiarisation with the new building, and test patient, staff and visitor “flows” through the hospital;
  • Immersive training for facilities and estates management teams on new systems and plant spaces;
  • A functional space to deliver the MRP’s important Community Benefits programme, which focuses on job creation, apprenticeships, learning opportunities, support for businesses large and small, and environmental enhancements.
