Students from four Lanarkshire secondary schools have completed a week of work experience at Hoare Lea, who are technical advisors to the Monklands Replacement Project.
The four young people were given an insight into a career in building services engineering. Each day of their work experience covered different areas such as mechanical, electrical, public health, sustainability, and digital engineering.
Kirsten Ross, Hoare Lea Senior Engineer, explained:
“Design tasks were set up for the students on each of these areas, which provided real experience of what building services engineers do on a daily basis.
“Each of the students really got stuck into the tasks and asked lots of questions. They definitely finished the week with a good overview of what building services engineers do. We hope we’ve inspired them to a career or future study in engineering.”
Thomas McAulay, who’s in S6 at Hamilton Grammar, has chosen engineering as his future career path.
Reflecting on his time at Hoare Lea, he said:
“Giving up my time over the October holidays to learn from industry professionals was a really positive experience. I learned that engineering is an interesting and worthwhile career. My time at Hoare Lea allowed me to gain first-hand experience in my chosen career and I’d fully recommend the experience to others.”
Lesley Aitken, Community Benefits Lead for the Monklands Replacement Project, thanked Hoare Lea for providing the opportunity.
Lesley explained:
“A key aim of our MRP Community Benefits programme is to support our local young people in achieving positive destinations when they leave school.
“Opportunities like this work experience not only provide insight into future careers associated with construction and healthcare but also give tangible evidence of workplace skills when they are applying for jobs or further study. As the Community Benefits programme evolves, we hope to provide more opportunities for our young people across a number of areas.”
