Community Wealth Building
Community Wealth Building is a different way of growing the economy. Instead of focusing just on big businesses or outside investment, it aims to build stronger local economies by creating local jobs and supporting a wide range of local businesses.
By working together with partners, the MRP will help NHS Lanarkshire support this approach by making sure the benefits they provide help local communities and keep money in the area.
Considerations for the socio-economic impact of the project
Scottish Government legislation published in 2018 requires public organisations to take account of socio-economic impact when planning a new development.
This is known as a Fairer Scotland Duty (FSD) Assessment. NHS Lanarkshire has completed a FSD assessment in accordance with this legislation and this is published in our site selection engagement archive.

Economic Stimulation + Job Creation
A new hospital for Lanarkshire will represent a significant capital investment in the local economy, amounting to hundreds of millions of pounds during construction and operation.
Social Equity + Inclusivity
Investment in the new Monklands hospital will enhance social equity by ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to a connected and integrated network of essential healthcare services.
Improved Access to Quality Healthcare
The new Monklands hospital will promote community outreach, health education, and preventative care, which promote healthier lifestyles, reducing the burden of chronic diseases.
Infrastructure Development + Environmental Impact
The construction of the new Monklands hospital will act as a trigger for broader infrastructure improvements in the surrounding area.
Public Health + Wellbeing
Public health initiatives will become more accessible, and with a higher public profile, which will have a long-term positive effect on the community’s overall health and well-being.
Education + Research Opportunities
In addition to healthcare services, the new Monklands hospital will serve as a hub for practical medical education, training and research.
