Community Benefits

The new hospital will bring about immense advantages to healthcare for the inhabitants of Lanarkshire and Scotland. However, the project also brings with it the opportunity to deliver a range of Community Benefits to the communities it serves beyond the delivery of a new healthcare building.

Working together with our contractor and with our project stakeholders across Lanarkshire, including North and South Lanarkshire Council, our local University Health & Social Care Partnerships, education colleagues and our local third (charities/voluntary groups) sector we will deliver Community Benefits to reflect the needs of our local communities and which will have a genuine positive impact.

The MRP Community Benefits will be delivered across five main themes:

Economic, Employment, Training, Environmental, and Community Priorities, and will contribute towards Community Wealth Building, providing our communities with skills and opportunities that will help them thrive into the future

The types of benefits to be delivered are:

Economic

By engaging with the supply chain (including SME’s/SB’s/SE’s) locally, confirming the opportunities available for contract tendering thoughout construction and offering advice to ensure that the supply chain is in the best position to tender for MRP contracts and other suitable opportunities.

Employment

Direct employment opportunities within the project, new entrant, apprenticeship and graduate roles.

Training

Supporting work placement opportunities and upskilling the workforce. Linking with our universities to add real-life experience to the existing curriculum and support learning. Providing opportunities for our young people to learn about the construction industry both through visits to site and the career paths available. Mentoring our young people by supporting enterprise initiatives which help develop key skills from an early age.

Environmental

Inline with the projects net zero status, supporting opportunities to educate on carbon reduction and habitat enhancement projects.

Community Priorities

Supporting opportunities to directly link with our communities to offer non-financial support. Providing technical or professional advice to support groups in delivering projects, providing volunteering hours or other resources to help community projects.

Who will deliver Community Benefits?

The delivery of Community Benefits will be achieved in a co-ordinated manner by NHS Lanarkshire, the contractor themselves or in conjunction with their supply chain, sub-contractors or consultants.

The delivery of all Community Benefits will be aligned to the stages of the MRP lifecycle, with the main delivery taking place during the construction period

The MRP delivers Community Benefits directly to complement those delivered by contractual means. The programme continues to be developed as the project progresses.

Schools and Further Education

Engaging with our future workforce to encourage community involvement in the project and to facilitate opportunities for skills, education and training programmes with local schools by delivering enterprise initiatives to raise aspirations and provide young people with the life skills to achieve success.

Learning Opportunities

As sustainability lies at the core of the project’s design philosophy, the Monklands Replacement Project aims to be low carbon, helping NHS Scotland deliver a net zero carbon health service.

The project is in a prime position to help develop the future sustainability workforce. Linking with NHS Lanarkshire’s sustainability internship programme, we were able to support a 12 week placement/Internship.
