Engagement

Collaboration
Throughout the planning process of the Monklands Replacement Project, patient representatives and clinical staff collaborated to exchange ideas and thoughts, drawing on their own experiences.
Collaborating with local schools, colleges, and businesses, the project team aims to establish education, training, and employment avenues. As the vision for the evolution of health services in Lanarkshire advances, the team will also seek insights from staff and patients to craft an appealing and inviting facility. This endeavour will continue over the upcoming months with a concerted effort to create a positive impact on the community.
Summer School
A group of 16 young people from 6 secondary schools in North Lanarkshire spent a week working on a design project for what will be the most advanced hospital in Scotland. The summer school was a successful collaboration between North Lanarkshire Council’s education team, the Developing the Young Workforce team, and Keppie Design, and drew on a wealth of previous experience with this kind of programme. The young people were articulate and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the brief, carefully considering rehabilitation, safety, privacy and dignity. Participants also learned about hospital staff and functions, and the vast array of career opportunities available throughout NHS Lanarkshire.
Martin Hill, NHS Lanarkshire Chair, expressed his gratitude to the young people for sharing their creativity and ideas and emphasised that the Monklands Replacement Project is an opportunity for everyone in the community to get involved.
Councillor Angela Campbell, North Lanarkshire Council’s Convener of Education and Families, said, “The commitment and enthusiasm of our young people has been truly inspiring over this programme.”
“The collaboration between service users and staff in the planning of the new hospital has transformed our clinical model and will help to reshape how we deliver healthcare across the county. It’s an exciting time for us all.”

Community benefits
The new hospital will bring about immense advantages to healthcare, the economy, and the inhabitants of Lanarkshire and Scotland.
The project aims to foster community engagement by supporting local initiatives and directing community benefits towards positive outcomes that contribute to reducing inequalities. Through various programs, such as skills training, apprenticeships, and job opportunities, the project aims to create sustainable employment for those who are unemployed or struggling to make ends meet.
Additionally, it seeks to promote economic growth by encouraging small and medium-sized businesses, the third sector, and supported businesses to get involved. This includes promoting opportunities for contract and supply chain participation, as well as community wealth building.
